The Columbus Blue Jackets were given a huge scare on Saturday night when star defenseman Zach Werenski left the ice in agony after blocking a shot. The shot came courtesy of Anaheim Ducks forward Troy Terry, and as soon as the puck struck Werenski things looked horrible.

The Blue Jackets blue liner was spun around by the impact of the shot on his right foot and he would immediately go crashing to the ice in pain. The shot appeared to catch Werenski on the back of his skate boot, and it was obvious that he was in extreme pain on the ice after blocking the shot.

Werenski was entirely unable to get back up to his own feet under his own power, and was instead forced to resort to crawling towards the Blue Jackets bench as he tried to get off the ice. Thankfully play would mercifully come to a stop, but Werenski would remain down on the ice at the bench door for several moments before eventually being helped off the ice.

Here's the video of the incident:

While things initially looked very bad, it would seem that Werenski has avoided the worst case scenario with some good news coming out of Columbus today. According to Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline, Werenski has avoided any broken bones and will only be out day to day as a result of this injury.

When you consider how bad things looked for Werenski in the moment, this has to come as a huge relief for the Blue Jackets and their fans.
