A big shakeup in Carolina.
The Carolina Hurricanes are getting closer to full health as the 2026-27 season rolls through October, and that means some tough roster decisions are coming along with it. Carolina made a pair of moves on Monday that will have an impact on their forward group heading into a matchup with the Boston Bruins.
Veteran winger Taylor Hall has been activated from injured reserve after missing the past five games. Hall went down with an upper-body injury during Carolina's October 13th contest against the Washington Capitals, and the Hurricanes have been waiting on his return ever since.
Before getting hurt, the 34-year-old was having a solid start to the campaign. Hall posted three goals and two assists for five points through his first eight games, skating an average of 13:01 per night. That production was a nice continuation of what he brought to the table last season, when he put up 48 points in 80 regular season games before turning it up in the playoffs with seven goals and 12 assists as the Hurricanes captured the Stanley Cup.
The big question now is where Hall slots back into the lineup. Prior to his injury, he was skating alongside Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake on a line that was generating a very strong 60.9% expected goals percentage. However, in Hall's absence, Stankoven and Blake have been playing with Nikolaj Ehlers, and that trio has been absolutely dominant, posting an eye-popping 71.1% xGoals%. That combination has arguably been one of the best forward lines in the entire league.
Still, given Hall's importance to last year's championship run, it would not be surprising to see him rejoin Stankoven and Blake. That could push William Carrier off the top line in favor of Ehlers. Either way, it is the kind of depth problem every team in the NHL wishes they had.
In a corresponding move, the Hurricanes sent forward Skyler Brind'Amour back down to the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. The younger Brind'Amour had been called up to fill in for Mark Jankowski, who has been dealing with a lower-body injury of his own. In his brief two-game stint with the big club, Skyler went without a point while winning half of his faceoff attempts.
Jankowski is not expected to suit up against Boston, but his return should not be far off. That means Brind'Amour's time in the AHL may not last too long if any other injuries pop up, but for now, Carolina has enough bodies to get by.
With Hall back in the fold and a matchup against the Bruins on deck, head coach Rod Brind'Amour has some interesting decisions to make regarding his forward combinations. The Hurricanes are stacking up nicely as a team that can roll four competitive lines, and getting a proven playoff performer like Hall back only strengthens their case as one of the Eastern Conference's top contenders.
