Hurricanes set an ugly NHL record in Game 6.

Hurricanes make NHL history.

The 2021 - 2022 Carolina Hurricanes have secured their spot in the National Hockey League's record books, but it is probably a spot they would have prefered not to own all things considered.

On Saturday night the Hurricanes faced off against the New York Rangers in Game 6 of their second round Stanley Cup playoff series, eventually falling to the Rangers by a score of 5 - 2. That loss would mark the Hurricanes' 6th consecutive loss on the road in these Stanley Cup playoffs and that is good enough for a piece of NHL history. According to Sportsnet Stats, no other team in the history of the league has ever gone 0 - 6 on the road to start the Stanley Cup playoffs, and it's hard to imagine that record ever being broken unless this current iteration of the Hurricanes manages to do it themselves.

The Hurricanes would have to beat the Rangers in Game 7 at home on Monday and then lose the first game of their series against the Tampa Bay Lightning in order to extend the record.

The reason the record will be so difficult to break of course due to just how dominant the Hurricanes have been on home ice in these playoffs. The reason they are still alive in spite of starting 0 - 6 on the road is due to the fact that they are also 7 - 0 on home ice, a bizarre combination that will be difficult to replicate, especially considering the fact that no team is going to set out to actively lose all of their road games.
