Watch out: the Penguins are about to be dealing players. More details below:
The feeling out of Pittsburgh is that Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas is on the verge of a significant trade. After the recent acquisition of right-shot defenseman Matt Dumba, the Penguins are expected to make more moves and team insider Mark Madden believes the arrival of Dumba in Pittsburgh “indicates that Erik Karlsson’s exit is pending and promising 19-year-old prospect Harrison Brunicke won’t make the team.”
He also believes Dubas is primed to make a flurry of moves and that Dumba was just the first domino, though Madden does not have any kind words for the Pens’ latest acquisition, who could be on the move again ahead of the deadline.
“Dumba, 30, is splendidly mediocre and has one year left on a deal carrying a $3.75 million cap hit that Dallas needed to dump. A second-round pick in 2028 accompanied. Big win by president of hockey ops/GM Kyle Dubas. He can likely flip Dumba at the 2026 trade deadline for another draft choice.”
Karlsson has recently been linked to a few teams, especially in Canada, with the Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly in the mix and the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers intrigued by the chatter. However, with those rumours come the talks of salary retention and other issues of a trade, thanks to Karlsson’s $10 million share of his $11.5 million annual cap hit through 2026-27.
The Penguins are also rumoured to be looking at moving goalie Tristan Jarry, especially after acquiring goaltender Arturs Silovs from the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. The Oilers are therefore back in the rumours when it comes to the possibility of acquiring Jarry if Dubas gets started with multiple moves out of Pittsburgh.
The free agency season is quiet this summer, but there is a feeling out there it will leave more room to trades taking place.
And it sounds like the Penguins are willing to make a few deals during the offseason. Stay tuned…
