Imminent trade for Rasmus Andersson?!

Multiple contenders are circling as Calgary weighs its next move.

The Calgary Flames might be inching closer to parting ways with defenseman Rasmus Andersson, who is set to become a UFA this July, with no signs of a contract extension on the horizon.

While Andersson isn’t necessarily pushing for a departure, the veteran blueliner doesn’t quite fit into Calgary’s current rebuilding timeline. That mismatch is creating a hot trade market, and insiders believe the Flames could command a significant return, including a first-round draft pick and a top NHL-ready prospect, if they decide to move him.

According to James Murphy, the trade window is heating up quickly, with Flames management reportedly aiming to finalize a deal before the Olympic break next month. Multiple teams are circling Andersson. The Boston Bruins have reportedly offered a young defenseman, Mason Lohrei, along with a first-round pick. The Detroit Red Wings are also expressing interest, but only if Andersson is willing to sign an extension.

The Flames are said to have made young blue liners Simon Edvinsson and Axel Sandin Pellikka off-limits in those discussions. Ottawa is another potential suitor, while the Vegas Golden Knights, Anaheim Ducks, and Dallas Stars are reportedly watching closely, per Murphy.

Timing and leverage will be critical. Andersson could prefer finishing the season in Calgary and testing free agency in July rather than committing to being moved to a new team. That choice will impact not only what the Flames can get in return but also which teams have the flexibility to strike a deal before the trade deadline.

With several strong contenders in play and the Olympic break approaching, it seems only a matter of time before Andersson’s future gets clearer.

On Friday morning, Pierre LeBrun added more to the imminent trade rumours, posting on X:

“As others have noted, things have heated up on the Rasmus Andersson trade front. He wasn’t held out of the lineup last night, but sense is talks have intensified.

“Let’s see where it goes over the next 24-48 hours as to whether it gets done or not.”

Whether Calgary cashes in now or loses him to free agency, one thing is clear: the Flames’ top blueliner is generating serious buzz across the league.
