The Toronto Maple Leafs have a dozen games left in the regular season and they have yet to settle on a goalie. Veteran goalie Matt Murray took part in his first full morning skate with the Maple Leafs this season on Tuesday morning, which hints at a significant step in his recovery from bilateral hip surgery.

There is also apparently a plan in place for Murray to return to Toronto’s crease as Chris Johnston explained on Insider Trading on TSN last night, explaining how the netminder will have an important appointment in the next two weeks, which could define whether we see Murray play a game this season:

“The mere fact he was on the ice at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday, the first time we’ve seen him skating with teammates since last season, at least the entire team. It’s another sign of progress and really the big date for Matt Murray will come in about a week and a half’s time when he meets with the surgeon who did his bilateral hip procedure to find out if at that point if he’s cleared to return to full practice. And if that is the case, of course he’s going to have to practice for a while, you’re likely looking at a conditioning stint and maybe I guess at the least play long enough and have a need, there’s a world where he gets back in but the good news in the short term is Murray is working his way back to health and should be good to play for certain somewhere next season.”

There was no update provided by Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe after practice on Tuesday. The team was focused on the game later that same evening against the New Jerseey Devils, which they ended up losing 6-3. Joseph Woll was beaten six times on 24 shots. He was backed up by Martin Jones as Ilya Samsonov remains sidelined with injury.

Could all of this come into play for a chance at Murray working his way back into the mix? I guess it will also depend on his meeting with his surgeon and his stint with the Marlies… At the beginning of the season, Murray’s $4.6875 million cap hit was placed on long-term injured reserve. Murray is in the final year of a four-year, $25 million deal he signed with the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 9, 2020 before he was shipped to Toronto along with a seventh-round pick in 2024. Ottawa retained 25% ($1.5625 million) of his salary in exchange for future considerations.

Would you want Murray in net for the Maple Leafs during the postseason?
