Important update on Alex Pietrangelo!

Things have changed drastically for the most coveted unrestricted free agent defenseman on the market Alex Pietrangelo on Friday.

On the opening day of the free agency, Pietrangelo was testing the waters and was aware that the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Vegas Golden Knights and his St. Louis Blues were interested in his services, but some of them have been active since noon.

The Maple Leafs didn’t think they were in a top position to land Pietrangelo on the UFA market and went with a more affordable option, signing T.J. Brodie to a four-year, $20 million contract.

Then, Torey Krug officially walked out on the Bruins, signing a seven-year deal with the Blues on Friday night as St. Louis is officially out of the running to get Pietrangelo back on their roster.

“We tried to sign (Alex). I want to give our ownership a ton of credit, going to the maximum number of years available… We used every tool under the CBA to ensure we could get something done. It just didn’t work out,” explained Blues GM Doug Armstrong.

“I look back on (talks). I’m not really sure why. I was hoping to get something done. We talked a lot. We exchanged offers during the season, during the pandemic. Multiple offers post-pandemic.”

Armstrong did add that he was hoping the Blues were still in the loop for Pietrangelo, but we don't know how he would manage to make it work. The numbers would never add up. The 30-year-old is expected to be looking at a deal that will pay him $7+ million annually. Darren Dreger of TSN recently reported that the Blues might have offered Pietrangelo $8M AAV, however, couldn’t what the length of the deal would be.

The Krug signing in St. Louis could mean that the Bruins are even more serious about trying to ink Pietrangelo, though you have to believe the Golden Knights will be a hard player as well.

However, TSN’s Carlo  Colaiacovo, who is a former teammate and close friend to Pietrangelo, has just revealed that the defenseman will not make his decision on where to play next tonight.

We will have to wait… At least, some of us can go to bed.
