There has been a great rally of hockey fans, especially in Colorado, that have come out to support Avalanche’s Nazem Kadri. Kadri, who is of Lebanese descent, has been the target of racist attacks and death threats as the result of a collision with St. Louis’ Jordan Binnington in Game 3 of this second-round series that has forced the Blues goalie out of the lineup. More abuse came after the Avalanche took a 3-1 lead in the series.
Ahead of Game 5 in Denver, Avalanche season ticket holder Adrienne Ruth printed up 300 flyers saying “Stand With Naz” to show support. The motto went viral and now fans get to show support from afar and on social media, including Mrs. Terpstra who shared a heartwarming story on what Kadri did for her daughter years ago.
On Twitter, Mrs. Terpstra shared the story when Kadri was playing for the Kitchener Rangers in the OHL (2006-08). Her family attended a Skate with the Rangers event and Kadri offered great advice to her distraught daughter.
“When Kadri was playing for the OHL’s Rangers, we took our children to a Skate with the Rangers event. My middle child had just started to play hockey and wasn’t much of a skater. She was getting discouraged because she fell a lot.
"I told her that if she asked any of the Rangers, they would probably tell her they used to fall when they were learning, too. She said, “Can we ask one of them?” So we skated over to the nearest Ranger, who happened to be Kadri.
“I told him my daughter had a question for him. He knelt down on the ice to be at her eye level and she said, “When you were learning to play hockey did you fall down a lot?” He replied, “All the time. But I just kept getting back up and trying again.”
“Kadri took the time to encourage a little girl who was ready to quit hockey. That little girl has been recruited to play varsity hockey at university next year. I will never stop telling this story.”
This is just incredible.
The Avalanche leads the best-of-7 series 3-2 heading into Game 6 in St. Louis : the game is currently being played. And we bet Kadri can feel the good vibes coming his way and encouraging him in his pivotal contest.
