Initial updates on Patrik Laine do not look good.

The Montreal Canadiens lost forward Patrik Laine on Saturday night after a knee on knee hit.

It will come as no surprise to those of you who saw the picture that led you to this article, a picture in which Patrik Laine's knee appears to bend at a sickening angle, but the initial updates on the Montreal Canadiens' newly acquired star forward aren't sounding good at all.

Laine was of course injured on Saturday night after he went knee on knee with Toronto Maple Leafs rookie centerman Cedric Pare, an incident that would leave him down on the ice for several long moments. Laine was eventually helped off the ice and unsurprisingly would never return to the contest.

Although no official medical update has been forthcoming from the Canadiens as of yet, we do have an eyewitness report that makes things sound rather dire for Laine. Patrick Fiolet of RDS reported seeing Laine leave the building in bad shape following the conclusion of Saturday night's game.

Translated from French:

"Patrik Laine left the Bell Centre in crutches and was wearing a knee brace over his left knee," wrote Fiolet.

That obviously does not sound good for either Laine or the Canadiens, but we will have to wait for an official update before we learn exactly just how badly he has been injured.

If you're looking for a bit of a silver lining here, Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis was holding out hope when asked about the status of Laine following the game. It's not much of a silver lining at all if I'm being perfectly honest, but it's the best you're going to get right now.

"Hopefully, it’s not too serious," said St. Louis.

As mentioned earlier some of the photos of the moment of impact look devastating, and are quite frankly difficult to look at without reflexively wincing at how much that must have hurt.

It looks even worse when you look at it frame by frame.

Stay tuned for all of the updates on this developing story.
