Red Wings continue to struggle with injuries down the final stretch of the regular season.
The Detroit Red Wings have struggled with injury down the final stretch of the regular season and Saturday brought with it news that suggests that trend will continue, at least for the time being.
On Saturday, the Red Wings announced that they were once again calling up forward John Leonard from the American Hockey League's Grand Rapid Griffins, with the call up being made under emergency conditions. This suggests that the Red Wings believe they would not otherwise be able to ice 12 forwards for tonight's game against the Dallas Stars, pointing to those aforementioned injury issues.
Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin remains out of the lineup since suffering an injury against the Florida Panthers earlier this month and it seems safe to suggest that will remain the case given today's announcement. Larkin last played on March 6th and had an assist during 17:28 of ice time prior to suffering the injury.
Larkin is expected to miss two weeks due to injury and earlier this week Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan announced that this would also be the case for veteran forward Andrew Copp who suffered a lower body injury during a face-off on March 10th.
Although the injury news is unfortunate for the Red Wings, it may mean that Leonard will actually get in the lineup. Leonard has been up and down numerous times this season but has only appeared in 9 NHL games, scoring 2 goals and adding 2 assists for a very respectable 4 points over that stretch.
