Huge boost. The Pens could use all the healthy bodies they can get.
As the Pittsburgh Penguins await the outcome of the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs first round playoff series, they’re keeping their skills sharp and practicing as a group this morning. Since defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets in their own opening round series, the Pens have been watching the Caps and Leafs series closely in an effort to get a read on their opponent in the next round of the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
Regardless of who the Penguins end up playing next, there may be some fresh bodies in the lineup when they resume play. Head coach Mike Sullivan announced this morning that defenseman Chad Ruhwedel and veteran forward Chris Kunitz skated with the team and are both close to retuning to action.
For a team that’s been fighting through injuries all season, the depth additions of both players would be an absolute gift.
