Injury updates on Logan Day and Kailer Yamamoto are both bad for the Oilers.

Not what the Oilers were hoping to hear.

The Edmonton Oilers provided medical update on two of their injured players on Sunday and unfortunately for fans of the organization in both cases the updates can only be considered bad news.

The biggest story of the day of course was the news that 25 year old undrafted defensive prospect Logan Day would be going under the knife for surgery as a result of an injury he suffered in training camp. We still do not know exactly how Day got injured or even what type of surgery will be required to repair the damage he sustained, so it is impossible to predict at this time how long he is expected to be out due to the surgery and the rehab that will follow.

Day is coming off of back to back seasons as a member of the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers affiliate team in the AHL, although his most recent campaign was the first time he played in a full AHL season. The young defenseman appeared in 64 games for the Condors during the 2018 - 2019 regular season, recording 7 goals and 27 assists for a total of 34 points. There's no question that this will prove to be a significant setback for the young man.

That was not the only piece of bad news of the day however. According to a report from Sportsnet's NHL insider Mark Spector of Sportsnet, the Oilers will also be without former 1st round draft pick Kailer Yamamoto for some time. Although it was expected that Yamamoto would start the season in the American Hockey League due to the offseason wrist surgery he underwent, it does not sound like he is being sent down to Bakersfield to play just yet. According to Masters the former 22nd overall pick at the 2017 NHL Entry Draft still needs more time to rehab his injured wrist and is being sent down to Bakersfield to continue his rehab program. Masters did not provide a timeline for Yamamoto's potential return which I suspect means he is still a ways away from being ready to play again.

Be sure to stay tuned as we will continue to bring you updates on the status of both players when information becomes available.
