The Philadelphia Flyers have turned the National Hockey League on its head with the most ridiculous offer sheet that has ever been put forward in NHL history.

On Friday, the Flyers proudly announced that they had talked Anaheim Ducks star forward Leo Carlsson into signing an offer sheet with their organization. Once the Flyers revealed the details of that offer sheet it wasn't a surprise that Carlsson signed, a staggering 5 year deal at an average annual value of $18 million.

The offer sheet is absurd based on those numbers alone, numbers that instantly make Carlsson the highest paid player in the entire NHL, but it gets even worse when you get into the details of Carlsson's new deal.

It was NHL insider Chris Johnston who first revealed that the contract was comprised entirely of signing bonuses, meaning that it will be virtually buyout proof. Here is how the bonuses break down year by year:

Year 1: $19.95 million
Year 2: $18.1 million
Year 3: $17.05 million
Year 4: $15.2 million
Year 5: $15 million

Yes you're reading that right. Carlsson's signing bonus in his first year alone would make him the highest paid player in the NHL, even surpassing the absurdly high first year of Kirill Kaprizov's new contract which pays out $19.1 million in total salary and signing bonuses in the first year of that deal.

While Carlsson will still earn a heft chunk of change through his actual salary, it will also represent a much smaller portion of the overall value of his next contract. Here is how the salary breaks down year by year:

Year 1: $850,00
Year 2: $900,000
Year 3: $950,000
Year 4: $1 million
Year 5: $1 million

An incredibly bold and risky move by the Flyers and I for one cannot wait to see how it turns out.
