It’s a well-known fact around the National Hockey League that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is extremely superstitious. This habit has even marked him as the most underpaid players in the NHL as Crosby has have been paid at an AAV of $8.7 million during 15 years of his his 18-year career in the big league… All because of his relationship with the number 87: Born on 8/7/87, Crosby has worn 87 his entire career and has made it a focal point of all of his contracts.

According to Dave Molinari of Pittsburgh Hockey Now, it will still be a sticking point for his next contract, when the current deal comes to an end in two years. While Crosby still cannot negotiate an extension at the moment, Molinari is adamant of a permutation of «87» in the deal.

“While precisely how many seasons Crosby’s next contract will cover is hard to say, there’s not much mystery about the money that will be involved. It’s pretty much a lock to be based on some permutation of «87,» whether it’s the third in a series of contracts with an $8.7 million salary-cap hit, a deal that pays him $87 an hour or one that’s worth 87 cents per second.”

When taking a look at Crosby’s superstitions and his obsession with the number 87, it does not seem impossible that his next contract to be $8.7 million AAV again.

While this is not a report of what Crosby’s next contract will look like, it feels almost guaranteed that it will have 87 involved in the numbers.
