The Toronto Maple Leafs have faltered out of the gate to start the 2025-26 National Hockey League regular season and now, with disappointing results through the first 20 games of the season, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is looking for a trade.

This was confirmed on Saturday night by National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman who shared his insight on the situation during the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. Friedman, who made the comments during the second intermission of Saturday night's game between the Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks, revealed that the Leafs are not interested in trading away their futures.

"I don't think they want to trade futures," revealed Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada. "I really don't believe that they want to do that, and I include Easton Cowan in that."

That being said Friedman, who is based in Toronto, admitted that there was a sense of something brewing within the Maple Leafs organization.

"You can feel the tension," said Friedman of the Leafs. "It's one of those weeks where everybody is kind of sitting there waiting for something to happen."

The Leafs however aren't just going to make a trade for the sake of it, with Friedman's comments leading me to believe that they are likely looking for some type of 1 for 1 trade.

"They want to make hockey trades, roster for roster," said Friedman.

Anyone hoping for a major shakeup is going to have to wait a little longer however, with Friedman revealing that the Maple Leafs core players are exempt at this time.

"No, we're not talking about the core," said Friedman. "We're not talking about the core, we're talking other players on the roster."

Keep your eyes peeled because it sounds like something could soon be coming from the Maple Leafs.
