A new report sheds light on where things stand between Matthews and the organization.
The long-term future of Auston Matthews continues to be one of the defining storylines in Toronto, but a new update suggests the situation may not be as volatile as previously believed.
According to Chris Johnston on First Up, there is still work to be done this offseason before Matthews feels fully comfortable with the direction of the organization, but some of the earlier uncertainty surrounding his future may be easing.
“There’s still things that have to happen this summer I think for Auston to feel truly comfortable about…the direction of the team,” Johnston said. “It does seem as though maybe some of the uncertainty might have died back a little.”
Matthews remains under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs through the 2027–28 season, carrying a $13.25 million cap hit and a full no-move clause, giving him complete control over his immediate future.
Despite that security, his long-term commitment has naturally become a talking point following Toronto’s disappointing 2025–26 campaign and a significant front-office shakeup that followed.
The organization has since brought in new leadership, including general manager John Chayka and senior advisor Mats Sundin, with a clear emphasis placed on re-establishing confidence within the team’s core: Matthews included.
During his end-of-season media availability, Matthews was cautious when discussing what’s next, offering only that he “can’t predict the future” while emphasizing a desire to see how the organization evolves under new management.
For now, the situation remains firmly in a wait-and-see phase.
While there is no indication of any immediate change, the coming months will be important as the Maple Leafs attempt to stabilize their direction and reinforce belief in their long-term vision.
And as Johnston’s comments suggest, the tone around Matthews’ future may be shifting… even if the questions have not fully gone away.
