Jack Eichel is set to become one of the NHL's richest players.
A National Hockey League insider has just made a very bold prediction when it comes to Las Vegas Golden Knights star forward Jack Eichel, one that could mean big trouble for the Golden Knights moving forward.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli was recently asked by fans for news regarding an extension for Eichel, with Seravalli revealing that there had been no movement on that front. Seravalli's next comments might have explained why however, with the insider predicting a monster number for Eichel's next NHL deal.
"Eichel extension news? Nothing on that front," began Seravalli during his NHL rumor recap. "That's gonna be a really interesting news to follow because like Connor McDavid we are talking mega-primo money for Jack Eichel and the Vegas Golden Knights."
Comparing anyone to Connor McDavid immediately means that you're going to be paying the big bucks to retain that player, and Seravalli had a very big number in mind which he shared with the audience.
"I don't know how they can go without him, I don't know how they could move on from him, but looking at their cap table it's hard to wedge in a really big extension," said Seravalli. "What that looks like, relative to the rest of true market value, I think what you're talking about with Jack Eichel is a $15+ million [average annual value] deal."
He did admit however that this could prove to be a major hurdle for the Golden Knights, who just committed a huge chunk of their cap space to star forward Mitch Marner who will command $12 million per season over the next 8 seasons.
"Then all of a sudden you crunch some numbers if you're looking at the Vegas Golden Knights cap situation. which is never easy, and you go 'How do they do this'" asked Seravalli.
Eichel is coming off of another huge season, one in which he had 28 goals and 66 assists for a total of 94 points in just 77 games. He continued that torrid pace in the Stanley cup playoffs, despite a relatively early playoff exit for the Golden Knights, with 1 goal and 9 assists for 10 points in just 11 playoff games.
Do you think the Golden Knights can get this done if Eichel's number is that high? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
