It looked bad when it happened, but in spite of that fans of the Buffalo Sabres were hoping that forward Josh Norris' apparent freak injury would prove to be a minor one.

Unfortunately on Monday we learned that is not the case, with National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman revealing that Norris is now expected to miss months of action as a result of this injury.

"You feel terrible for Josh Norris," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "The way he went off the ice he just knew, and it looks like it's going to be 8 weeks at least for him is what the word is."

Norris was injured in the very first game of the season for the Sabres in what was really a freak accident type of scenario. Norris took a faceoff against the New York Rangers and immediately collapsed to the ice despite the fact that there appeared to be no contact on the play. Whatever was wrong with Norris it appeared to be serious however, with Norris' body language looking terrible as he came off the ice.

Making matters worse for the Sabres is the fact that they gave up a lot in order to acquire Norris, a trade that was heavily criticized at the time because of Norris' long history of being unable to remain healthy. Since the now infamous trade, in which the Sabres also acquired defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker and a sixth round pick but gave up forward Dylan Cozens, Norris has only appeared in a total of 4 games for the Sabres due to injury. For the sake of comparison, Cozens has since played 23 games for the Ottawa Senators.

A terrible update for the Buffalo Sabres who have already had a rough start to the 2025-26 NHL regular season.
