The Islanders fans turn on their team after an embarrassing effort on Sunday night.
The New York Islanders are going to have a very long summer.
A little over a week ago, the Islanders made the shocking move to fire National Hockey League legend Patrick Roy, relieving him of his head coaching duties and immediately replacing him with veteran NHL head coach Peter Deboer. It was a move that very much mimicked a successful late-season coaching change from the Vegas Golden Knights, who have gone on a run since firing head coach Bruce Cassidy and replacing him with John Tortorella.
The Islanders however have been unable to replicate that same success and on Sunday night it all came crashing down as the Islanders put up an embarrassing effort in what was a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive. While the Islanders kept it close for the first ~35 minutes of the game, their opponents, the Montreal Canadiens, would explode for 3 goals in 55 seconds late in the second period.
As you would expect, the fans who paid good money to attend this game were not at all amused and booed the Islanders out of their own building.
If you thought that would light a fire under the Islanders it did not, with the Islanders managing to pick up just a single goal in the third period before losing by a score of 4-1 and kissing their playoff hopes goodbye.
