Some surprising news from the veteran winger today.
According to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the San Jose Sharks have placed forward Jeff Skinner on unconditional waivers. Should Skinner clear waivers his NHL contract will be terminated and he'll become an unrestricted free agent.
The 33 year old forward was on a one year deal with the Sharks, earning $3 million. Of course, thanks to a 2024 contract buy-out from the Buffalo Sabres, Skinner is still earning a good chunk of change regardless of how things play out for him. He's making $4.4 million this season, $6.4 million next season and then $2.4 million for the next three seasons, ending in 2030. The guy's not hurting for money...
With 6 goals and 13 points in 32 games with the Sharks this season, it's clear that Skinner still has some game so it'll be interesting to see if he gets another shot with a new team as a free agent. Again, I can't imagine any teams will pick him up at a $3 million cap hit when they can negotiate a much cheaper deal with him a day later as a free agent.
So... is this it for Skinner? Is his NHL career over, or will we see him resurface with a new team come Tuesday afternoon?
