As part of our Countdown to Puck Drop series during the month of September, today we take a deep dive on the Buffalo Sabres.
The Sabres are starting fresh following a disappointing season, with coach Phil Housley and general manager Jason Botterill now in charge.
After registering only 78 points in the standings last season, the Sabres tried to fix one of their biggest weaknesses in the off-season, their blue line, by acquiring Montreal Canadiens defenseman Nathan Beaulieu. They also landed defenseman Marco Scandella and former captain Jason Pominville from the Minnesota Wild in a trade for forwards Marcus Foligno and Tyler Ennis.
After quite the health scare for one of their own, when forward Kyle Okposo was admitted to intensive care in April, the Sabres will look to turn the page on a must-forget campaign.
Maybe beginners’ luck will play a role and push the Sabres, seeing that Housley has never been a head coach in the NHL.
