It sounds like Brendan Shanahan is done with the Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly granted permission for team President Brendan Shanahan to meet with the New York Islanders about their vacant President position.

TSN insider Chris Johnston was the first to report that the Islanders had asked Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Maple Leafs, for permission to speak with Shanahan.

Shanahan, whose contract expires on June 30, has been president of the Maple Leafs since April of 2014.

The Leafs have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 9 consecutive seasons under Shanahan, but have failed to advance past the second round. With Shanahan's contract expiring and with the Leafs now in a bit of a transition, not might be the perfect time to turn the page from the Shanahan Era.

As for the Islanders, they're rebuilding their front office this upcoming offseason after parting ways with former president and general manager Lou Lamoriello, who previously worked under Shanahan in Toronto. It's been reported by Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman that Marc Bergevin and Mathieu Darche will each be getting a second interview for the Islanders' general manager job, and that Jarmo Kekalainen is also considered a candidate.
