Things boil over in practice today and insider Elliotte Friedman drops a bomb
It may seem absolutely unfathomable but somehow the Edmonton Oilers' goaltending situation has gone from bad to worse this season.
After three and a half seasons of sub-par goaltending from Stuart Skinner, the Oilers attempted to turn the page in a blockbuster trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Oilers GM Stan Bowman acquired goaltender Tristan Jarry for Skinner in a move to upgrade the team's goaltending but... well... it hasn't worked out that way.
Since the trade Jarry has a 3.96 GAA and a .862 save percentage. By comparison Skinner has a 2.63 GAA and a .889 save percentage in the same time for the Penguins
Ouch...
Now there are reports that Jarry has been clashing with teammates behind the scenes and today NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that things have boiled over onto the ice.
"There's a lot of talk out there about Jarry got into it in practice with some of his teammates out there," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "It's been a hard year for the Oilers."
Oilers insider Bob Stauffer also confirmed that there's some friction between the team and their goaltender.
"There's some extraneous things that have me quite concerned with Tristan," said Stauffer on Oilers Now. "I can read between the lines of what was going on on the ice yesterday in practice and there seemed to be some salvos flying. I didn't like that that Jarry, when the Oilers lost 7-3 to Minnesota, talked about how the team is playing defensively in front of him."
I hate to say 'I told you so' but...
In what word was Tristan Jarry, the 25th best goaltender in the NHL by statistics at the time of the trade, ever going to be the solution for the Oilers? Say what you will about Skinner, at least he was a good teammate who was liked by his own team.
Bowman and the Oilers have failed over and over and over again to address this team's most glaring deficiency. And then when they actually try to address the problem, they make things even worse.
Double ouch...
