Stevie Y's list of dance partners just got longer.
The trade request from Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has flipped the hockey world on its head.
Larkin has stolen the lion's share of hockey's headlines over the past week, all while the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes duke it out for the Stanley Cup. That's pretty telling...
Originally, it was believed that Larkin, who has a full no-trade clause, would only accept a trade to one of three teams: The Minnesota Wild, the Florida Panthers or the Vegas Golden Knights. Now, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun is reporting that Larkin has opened up his trade list.
From LeBrun's most recent column for The Athletic:
Yzerman went back to Brisson and asked to expand their original list of three teams, and my sense is that Brisson was receptive to that to some degree. So I don’t think we’re just dealing with the Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers anymore.
Secondly, regardless of being on the list or not, all kinds of teams have called to see what’s what, many of them interested in getting involved. That’s given Brisson and Larkin more to think about. For example, the Dallas Stars have absolutely checked in. They haven’t extended restricted free agent Jason Robertson yet, although those contract discussions continue. Food for thought if an extension doesn’t get done in due time.
And third, in a potential scenario that might help thread the needle, a trade could involve a third team in a transaction to make the assets work for Detroit. That would especially apply to a team like the Wild, who, straight up, I don’t think have the parts to appease Detroit in a Larkin trade — or at least the parts that the Red Wings would want. Finding a way to get assets from a third team might be a viable scenario.
LeBrun mentions only the Dallas Stars, but I think you have to assume that nearly every contending team has interest in Larkin now. Would a player like Larkin has pushed teams like Montreal, Buffalo, Colorado and Anaheim over the top? It's debatable, but you have to remember that Larkin has full control over where he ends up and these teams will have some work to do if they want to woo Larkin over the likes of Vegas, Florida and Minnesota.
