It's official, John Tortorella will NOT be returning to the Vegas Golden Knights next season.

The team made the announcement on social media earlier today, thanking Tortorella for his short time with the team:

John Tortorella's tenure with the Vegas Golden Knights will go down as one of the most unusual coaching stints in recent NHL history. Hired on March 29 after the surprising dismissal of Bruce Cassidy, Tortorella arrived in Las Vegas with just eight games remaining in the regular season and a mandate to shake a talented but underperforming roster out of its slump. The move was viewed by many as a desperate gamble, but for a time, it looked like a masterstroke.

Tortorella immediately brought his trademark intensity and accountability to the Golden Knights. Vegas responded with a remarkable 7-0-1 record over its final eight regular-season games, surging to a Pacific Division title and entering the Stanley Cup Playoffs with renewed confidence. Players spoke openly about the energy he brought behind the bench, while management praised his ability to simplify the team's game and refocus the roster on the fundamentals that had made Vegas a perennial contender.

The playoffs only strengthened the perception that Tortorella was exactly what the Golden Knights needed. Vegas dispatched the Utah Mammoth and Anaheim Ducks before stunning the hockey world with a sweep of the Presidents' Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final. For Tortorella, it marked his first trip to the Stanley Cup Final since leading the Tampa Bay Lightning to a championship more than two decades earlier.

Of course, it would not be a Tortorella coaching stint without a little controversy. Throughout the postseason he remained one of the league's most outspoken personalities, drawing headlines for his fiery media interactions and blunt assessments of both players and reporters. Even during the Stanley Cup Final, Tortorella's confrontational style remained front and center as he defended his decisions and pushed back against criticism amid a difficult series against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ultimately, the Golden Knights came up short. After holding their own through much of the Final, Vegas fell to the Hurricanes in six games. While the defeat was disappointing, it did little to diminish the impressive turnaround Tortorella orchestrated in less than three months behind the bench. He inherited a team that appeared to be heading toward an early playoff exit and guided it all the way to the brink of a Stanley Cup championship.

In the end, however, the partnership was always intended to be temporary. With Tortorella's short-term contract expiring at the end of the season, the Golden Knights announced today that they would not renew his deal. Despite the Stanley Cup Final appearance, Vegas has opted to move in a different direction behind the bench. Tortorella leaves the organization after just 79 days, but his brief tenure will be remembered as a dramatic and successful attempt to rescue a season that appeared to be slipping away...
