Goaltender Ivan Fedotov is available less then 2 weeks after being traded.
A once highly touted prospect is now available for the second time in the span of just under two weeks.
On Friday, the Columbus Blue Jackets made the curious decision of placing goaltender Ivan Fedotov on waivers. The decision came less than 2 weeks after the Blue Jackets initially acquired Fedotov in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers, a trade in which the Blue Jackets gave up a sixth round draft pick in next year's National Hockey League Entry Draft.
According to a report from Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline, this is not a sign that the Blue Jackets have lost faith in Fedotov but quite the opposite. According to Portzline the plan is now to make Fedotov the starting goaltender for their American Hockey League affiliate team, the Cleveland Monsters, although he will need to clear waivers before that can become a reality.
'The reality is that all 31 NHL teams will now have the chance to pick up the goaltender, Who is in the final year of a 2 year deal that carries an average annual value and cap hit of $3.25 million per 1.
Fedotov was once a highly touted prospect from the Kontinental Hockey League, stemming from two incredible seasons with Chelyabinsk Traktor and CSKA Moscow. During the 2021-22 season with CSKA Moscow, Fedotov recorded a 2.00 goals against average and a .919 save percentage on his way to a Gagarin Cup, the KHL equivalent of the Stanley Cup.
Whether or not any other teams in the NHL will be willing to take on Fedotov's cap hit in the hopes of seeing him achieve his potential in the NHL remains to be seen.
