The 2nd overall pick signs on the dotted line.
Ivar Stenberg has signed an entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks.
The San Jose Sharks have wasted little time getting Stenberg under contract, officially signing the second-overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to his three-year entry-level deal just days after selecting him. It is another sign that general manager Mike Grier believes the 18-year-old is ready to become a major part of the organization's rebuilding core, and there is every reason to believe Stenberg will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact this season.
Stenberg arrives in San Jose after an outstanding developmental path in Sweden with Frölunda HC. Rather than dominating only against junior competition, he proved he could thrive against seasoned professionals in the Swedish Hockey League, producing 33 points in 43 games while showcasing the complete offensive toolkit that made him one of the most coveted prospects in the draft. His vision, puck skills and elite hockey IQ consistently stood out, but perhaps most impressive was his maturity. Scouts have long praised Stenberg as a player with very few weaknesses, capable of driving offense without sacrificing defensive responsibility.
That all-around game is exactly what makes him such an intriguing fit in San Jose. The Sharks already have elite young talent headlined by Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, but Stenberg brings another dynamic offensive weapon capable of complementing both players. Whether he begins the season in a top-six role or is eased into the lineup on the second line, his ability to make plays in traffic, create scoring chances off the rush and finish around the net should immediately improve San Jose's offensive depth.
His style also gives the Sharks more flexibility. Stenberg is comfortable playing either wing, possesses an NHL-ready shot and has already demonstrated that he can contribute on both special teams. He has the intelligence to quarterback puck movement on the power play while also being reliable enough away from the puck to earn trust in late-game situations. Those are qualities that often separate good young players from future stars.
Of course, expectations should remain realistic. Even highly drafted prospects experience growing pains during their first NHL season, particularly when making the jump from European professional hockey to the NHL's pace and physicality. However, Stenberg's experience playing against men in Sweden should help smooth that transition, and his polished two-way game gives him a higher floor than many recent top prospects.
For a Sharks team that continues to accelerate its rebuild, Stenberg represents another cornerstone piece. His arrival adds even more excitement to one of the league's most promising young cores, and if his development continues on its current trajectory, he has all the tools to become a top-line winger capable of helping lead San Jose back into playoff contention in the years ahead. The future is undeniably bright in San Jose, and Ivar Stenberg looks poised to become one of the biggest reasons why.
