The timing of the split is notable. Breakup speculation intensified this week after McRae was asked by Variety about rumors linking her to MAGA politics. Those rumors stemmed from Hughes and his Team USA teammates sharing a congratulatory phone call with President Donald Trump after winning Olympic gold in February. During that call, the team laughed as Trump made a joke at the expense of the women's hockey team, which had also captured gold.

McRae addressed the political chatter carefully. "I like to say my piece through organizations I support and the environment that I have on tour," she told Variety, noting that proceeds from her recent tour had been donated to LGBTQ youth nonprofit the Trevor Project and the Global Fund for Women.

"I think it's pretty obvious what kind of person I am and the things I support," she added.
