The Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens have enjoyed a fierce rivalry for many years, but on Saturday night one fan took that rivalry just a little too far.

A bizarre video emerged last night during the course of the matchup between the Canadiens and Leafs, one showing referee JT Luxmore pulling a small green apple out of his pocket and seemingly offering it to Canadiens goaltender Jacob Fowler. It seemed like a bit of a joke between the two men, but following the game Fowler would confirm that there was a disturbing meaning behind that joke.

Luxmore hadn't produced the apple himself and instead it had been thrown at Fowler during the course of play, presumably by an angry fan in Toronto. Fowler revealed that he and Luxmore had been joking about whether or not a goal would have been called back in such a scenario, although Fowler admitted he didn't find it nearly as funny when it happened initially.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has since confirmed the apple was thrown by a fan, and I can only hope that the person who tried to assault Fowler in this manner faces the full consequences of their actions. With how many cameras there are in the building, it's hard to imagine they will get away with it.
