Markstrom on the trading block despite signing a new deal earlier this season.
The New Jersey Devils may be looking to move on from goaltender Jacob Markstrom, this in spite of the fact that they just recently signed him to a brand new contract.
According to a report from the National Hockey League Network's own Kevin Weekes, the New Jersey Devils have placed the veteran goaltender on the trading block. Weekes stresses that a deal is not imminent, but the Devils are currently actively gauging interest from rival teams.
This likely means that the Devils are hoping to move Markstrom ahead of the upcoming NHL Entry Draft, which if true would only leave them a few weeks to find a suitable trade for Markstrom.
Markstrom's value is unfortunately going to be at an all time low with the 36 year old coming off two of the worst statistical seasons of his NHL career. This past season Markstrom recorded a 3.07 goals against average and a .883 save percentage over 44 regular season games with the Devils, and you would have to go back a decade to when he played just 3 games for the Vancouver Canucks during the 2014-15 season to find a worse performance from Markstrom.
Markstrom also comes with a significant price tag for the next two seasons thanks to that extension he signed with the Devils. Markstrom will have a cap hit of $6 million per season for the next two seasons, with his new contract expiring at the end of the 2027-28 season.
No word yet from Weekes on what teams may or may not have expressed interest in Markstrom, but I suspect this will be a fairly challenging deal for the Devils to get done if they are hoping for any kind of significant return.
Would you make a trade for Jacob Markstrom?
