Virtanen gets another chance at the NHL.

Jake Virtanen will get another shot in the National Hockey League, at least for now.

According to an announcement made via the Edmonton Oilers' official website, Virtanen has signed a professional tryout offer with their team and will be joining the Oilers in training camp. This no doubt marks a major moment in Virtanen's career given the turmoil he has gone through over the course of the last two seasons.

As many of you reading this will already know, Virtanen was embroiled in a sexual assault scandal that resulted in the Vancouver Canucks cutting ties with him after he was accused by a woman of forcing himself on her during an incident that dated back to 2017. This accusation had a major impact on Virtanen's career, resulting in him spending last season playing in the Kontinental Hockey League for Moscow Spartak.

Virtanen was found not guilty of the charges he faced in criminal court this past July and it would seem that being acquitted of those charges has now given him the chance to get his life back on track.

He will still have to prove himself in training camp if he hopes to earn a contract from the Edmonton Oilers, but no doubt even the PTO he signed this week had to feel like a moment of vindication for Virtanen.

The 26 year old winger never truly delivered on his draft pedigree in Vancouver, the Canucks selected him in the first round (6th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, but perhaps the hard times he has experienced over the last few years can serve as motivation to help him reach a new high watermark for his career.

As part of the announcement of Virtanen joining the team, the Oilers have also announced that they are bringing in 34 year old defenseman Jason Demers in on a PTO as well.

Like Virtanen, Demers spent last season in the Kontinental Hockey League although in his case he played for Kazan Ak-Bars. Demers made just 5 appearances in the KHL, and his most recent NHL experience came during the 2020 - 2021 season when he appeared in 41 games for the Arizona Coyotes.
