It was a move that will remain puzzling to fans of the Detroit Red Wings, especially after yesterday's underwhelming first day of the NHL free agency period.
Detroit raised eyebrows everywhere by trading popular defenseman Jake Walman, who spent the bulk of last season playing on the top pairing with Moritz Seider, to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for future considerations. What was even more strange was that Detroit attached the 2nd round draft pick they just acquired in a minor swap with the Nashville Predators to Walman as part of the deal.
In the meantime, Walman posted a heartfelt goodbye message to his social media account thanking the Red Wings and the fans for his time in the Motor City:
"Thank you to the city of Detroit," his message read. "It was an honor to play for the Red Wings and embrace what it means to be a player for this historic franchise.
Thank you to the fans, who felt like a big family to me, for welcoming me to your amazing city. It was a privilege to play for you. As I embark on this next chapter of my career, know that your support, your kind messages, and well wishes will stay with me always."
