James Reimer's NHL comeback comes to a quick and sudden end.

The National Hockey League is not a place for the faint of heart with teams ruthlessly trying to win by any means necessary, and sometimes that means making tough decisions.

On Saturday the New York Rangers did just that when they made the decision to move on from veteran NHL goaltender James Reimer. The Rangers initially signed Reimer in a desperation move following the season-ending injury to Rangers start netminder Igor Shesterkin, and it would now seem that they realize it was perhaps a bit too desperate.

Reimer has now been placed on waivers for the purpose of contract termination, and I suspect there will be no teams around the NHL who will submit a claim for him.

Initially things looked very promising for the veteran of over 500 NHL games. Reimer would shine in a conditioning stint with the Rangers American Hockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolfpack, posting a shutout in what was effectively his tryout. Reimer's NHL comeback would last just one period with the Rangers though and it's very easy to see why. Despite his success in the AHL, his first and only period in the NHL during his comeback would see him record a 9.00 goals against average and a .675 save percentage. Reimer was quickly pulled from the game after that period and it seems the Rangers never had any intention of using him again after what they saw from the 28 year old netminder.
