The Dallas Stars may have just lost their captain.

On Sunday afternoon, during a game between the Stars and Montreal Canadiens, Stars captain Jamie Benn appeared to suffer a serious injury when he smashed his face hard on the ice.

The incident occurred with a little over 13 minutes left to go in the game's third period and seemed more like a freak accident than anything else. Benn was bumped by Canadiens forward Zachary Bolduc on the play but there didn't seem to be anything malicious that caused all of this to happen.

Benn simply spun around after the contact with Bolduc and, due to the fact that Benn is one of the few players in the National Hockey League still playing without a visor, landed awkwardly before the momentum cause his face to take a sickening bounce off the ice.

Here is the replay:

Benn looked like he was in a lot of trouble and needed to be helped off the ice, and even then it looked like he was struggling to manage the effort. As you can see in this next video, Benn appeared to be struggling to get off the ice even while being dragged by multiple members of the Stars training staff.

No official update from the Stars at this time.
