Bad news for the Avalanche.

The Colorado Avalanche have taken a big hit to their roster after just 1 game in their second round series against the Dallas Stars and unfortunately it sounds like things won't be getting any better for them any time soon.

On Monday Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar addressed the media and it was during that availability that he provided an update on injured goaltender Philipp Grubauer and on injured defenseman Erik Johnson. Unfortunately the news was not good and Bednar has declared that both men will now be out indefinitely for the Avalanche, something that I take to mean that he does not expect to see them back in this series at the very least.

The injuries to Johnson and Grubauer were the two biggest talking points coming out of this game and for good reason, in the case of Gubauer the injury looked to be pretty serious and in the case of Johnson things did not look much better with both men being forced to leave Game 1 for good. In the case of Grubauer there did not seem to be a whole lot on the play that would have led to an injury, and as I wrote at the time these are the type of injuries that in the case of goaltenders often prove to be the worst and I am not at all surprised to see Grubauer ruled out for the foreseeable future.

Here's how his injury happened:

I will say that I was more hopeful when it came to the injury suffered by Erik Johnson given that he was able to come back from the locker room at the start of the second period following the initial injury. Johnson was of course forced to leave the game after falling later in the contest against the Stars and it seems as though he had good reason to lose his balance with his injury also now looking like it is going to be on the longer term variety.

Here's the initial injury that Johnson suffered in Game 1:

I'm sorry to say Avalanche fans but I would be lying if I suggested that this was anything less than a devastating blow to your team, however these moments do at times cause teams to rally in response so we will have to wait and see how the Avalanche will respond while missing two key pieces of their roster.
