Jason Robertson is prepared to place a multi-million dollar bet on himself.

We have been awaiting confirmation regarding whether or not Robertson will use the last piece of leverage he has to use in his negotiations with the Dallas Stars, filing for arbitration before the 5 PM EST deadline on Sunday, and we now have our answer.

National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman has just confirmed that Robertson will in fact use what little leverage he has and will file for arbitration ahead of the deadline. This now puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the Dallas Stars to get a long term deal done before the arbitration hearing, otherwise they could legitimately face a scenario in which they could lose Robertson for nothing.

Normally when a player elects for arbitration the team has the advantage of determining whether or not the neutral arbitrator will award a 1 year or a 2 year deal. In the case of players like Robertson however, players who are just 1 year away from being an unrestricted free agent, the team doesn't get to choose and a 1 year deal is always the outcome. This means that, should the two sides fail to reach a deal before arbitration, Robertson is guaranteed to receive a 1 year contract that would walk him right to unrestricted free agency at the end of next season.

The Stars would still be able to trade Robertson during the season, Robertson has no trade protection, he will fetch significantly less as a pending UFA than he would have had the Stars managed to find a suitable trade this summer.

While Robertson does run the risk of potential being injured or having a bad season, he could also earn a much higher pay day than he previously imagined if he continues to produce at an elite level. This past season he had 45 goals and 51 assists for 96 points in just 82 games and, given some of the contracts we are seeing tossed around the NHL this summer, Robertson could easily become one of the league's top earning stars if he hits the open market.
