First fight of the year candidate! I mean, his brother is a UFC fighter...
It was a clean hit, but Jeff Malott saw it as an opportunity to quickly become a fan favourite in Los Angeles.
In the first period of the late night third game of the season, the Kings hosted the Colorado Avalanche and Josh Manson got things rocking in the first frame. When the defense had a chance, he flattened and pretty much obliterated Kings top forward Warren Foegele. It was not a dirty play, just a hard bone crushing hit, but from the Kings’ bench, Malott was having none of it.
As soon as he could he jumped on the ice and went over to Manson, dropping the gloves and looking for payback.
He went after Manson, who was celebrating his birthday on Tuesday, and took him down MMA style.
Perhaps that has to do with fighting running in the family as commentators quickly pointed out that his brother Mike Malott is a UFC fighter.
They had a heated exchange when tangled on the ice as officials attempted to separate them. While both players received fighting majors, Malott also got an instigator penalty, sending Colorado on the power-play. But the crowd did not care.
After the fight, Malott seemed to threatened Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog as the crowd cheered him on as he made his way down the tunnel.
Immediate fan favourite in LA. The season is still young, but fans online are already putting this one in the fight of the year candidate.
