As we get closer to when all 32 National Hockey League clubs will convene for Training Camp prior to the start of the new season, one of the more interesting story lines is the status of Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
Now the main man in the crease following the trade of Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators earlier this offseason, Swayman has yet to agree to a new contract. And if this report from a Bruins podcast holds true, the two sides are even further apart in negotiations than originally thought.
According to New England Sports Radio hosts "Jones & Keefe", Swayman is seeking $10 million a year in his next contract, which would be a massive raise from the $3.475 million that he made last season:
Of course, this alleged demand could very well be merely a negotiating tactic. But if it's an actual contract request, it would mean Swayman wants to be paid the same as Stanley Cup champions Sergei Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevskiy ($10 million AAV each), and eclipse the AAV of Connor Hellebuyck ($9.5 million) and Ilya Sorokin ($8.5 million).
It would also mean that the Bruins would be carrying $14 million worth of goaltending, as the newly acquired Joonas Korpisalo is under contract for four more seasons at an AAV of $4 million.
Currently, the highest paid net minder is Carey Price ($10.5 million), though his career has all but officially ended.
What are the chances that this alleged demand from Swayman is real, and if so, is he really justified in asking to become tied as the 2nd highest paid NHL goalie?
