Jets have another opportunity to land D-man on waivers!

The Winnipeg Jets stunned everyone on Wednesday when they pulled a brutal move, claiming defenseman Luca Sbisa off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks. You see, Sbisa was set to sign a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks after he was placed on waivers on Tuesday due to the NHL’s rules about signing a free agent during the season.

However, the Jets, who are in dire need of help on the back end, went ahead with the move and claimed him off waivers before the Ducks were able to sign him as one of their own.

Now, the Jets might investigate the possibility of claiming yet another blue liner off waivers as the Pittsburgh Penguins have placed Zach Trotman on the wire on Friday.

The 29-year-old has yet to play a game this season, seeing that he is making a return from injury. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman claims Trotman is now healthy and could be considered by NHL teams, and of course, the Jets come to mind.

Facing cap issues this summer, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff traded defenseman Trouba to the New York Rangers, saw Tyler Myers hitting free agency (where the Vancouver Canucks signed him) and watched Ben Chiarot go as a UFA to Montreal. Out of the blue, veteran Dustin Byfuglien then told the Jets that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to play out the final two years of his contract anymore. This was a hard blow for the Jets’ back end who has yet to recover from all the changes.

Let’s see what they decide to do next or if Trotman will simply head back down to the minors as part of his re-assignment.
