A terrifying scene unfolded Tuesday night in Winnipeg as Jets defenseman Haydn Fleury was stretchered off the ice and transported to hospital following a violent collision into the end boards against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The incident occurred late in the first period when Fleury fell awkwardly after being shoved by Vegas forward Keegan Kolesar and slid uncontrollably into the boards, with his back and neck absorbing the brunt of the impact. The crash immediately drew concern from players and fans alike as medical staff rushed to Fleury’s side.

While Fleury was seen moving on the ice, the decision was made to remove him on a backboard and stretcher as a precaution. He was taken to hospital by ambulance, where Jets head coach Scott Arniel later confirmed Fleury would remain overnight for further evaluation.

Arniel revealed the extent of the injuries following the game, painting a troubling picture.

“Obviously he’s got a lot of tests to go through,” Arniel said. “He does have a broken nose, so there’s a few different things that kind of happened off it. A little bit of everything. Obviously slammed his back, hit his neck, hit his head, and obviously his nose.”

The list of affected areas, back, neck, head, and face, underscores just how serious the collision was and why the team is taking a cautious approach. Injuries involving the neck and head, in particular, will warrant extensive testing before any timeline can even be discussed. Especially since Fleury already sustained a concussion this season…

Kolesar was not penalized on the play but immediately fought Jets captain Adam Lowry when action resumed. The Golden Knights went on to win the game 4-3 in overtime, though the result felt secondary given the severity of Fleury’s situation.

Further updates on Fleury’s condition were given later on Wednesday when head coach Scott Arniel confirmed Wednesday that Fleury was released from the hospital late last night. According to Arniel, Fleury suffered a broken nose and a bruised back as a result of the violent collision into the end boards. He will also require further testing to evaluate a possible concussion.
