Jets teammate makes emotional plea to Connor Hellebuyck amid trade saga

The Winnipeg Jets are navigating one of the most turbulent stretches in franchise history as training camp opens across the NHL. Connor Hellebuyck, the three-time Vezina winner who spent all 11 of his NHL seasons in Winnipeg, has been formally suspended for failing to report.

But amid the organizational chaos, it was a teammate's candid words that cut deepest.

Jets forward Kyle Connor spoke publicly about the standoff, describing the entire ordeal as "heartbreaking."

“I know that a lot of guys in that room are heartbroken.”

In a press meeting with reporters, Connor revealed that he personally attempted to persuade Hellebuyck not to push for a trade out of Winnipeg.

The effort was unsuccessful. Connor acknowledged that while he tried to change Hellebuyck's mind, he ultimately respects the goaltender's right to make his own choice.

Connor did not stop there. When asked what the locker room reception might look like if Hellebuyck were to return, the forward offered a remarkably unfiltered answer.

"Come back and just play or come back and re-commit to this organization. I think that's the biggest question, if he just comes back I mean that's gonna be a pretty tough situation to walk into to be honest," Connor said.

He softened the message slightly, adding that the door remains open under the right circumstances. "For some reason if he changes his mind and re-commits here obviously we'll welcome him with open arms and we still love the guy. It's just a very tough situation."

The distinction Connor drew was clear. Simply showing up would not be enough. A genuine recommitment to the organization would be required for things to work.

Hellebuyck still has five years and an $8.5 million annual cap hit remaining on his contract, which limits the number of realistic suitors. The Buffalo Sabres were reportedly involved in serious conversations around draft time, but those discussions have stalled. The Carolina Hurricanes have also surfaced as a potential destination, though no package approaching fair value has emerged.

General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is looking to find a trade that keeps the focus for the Jets on winning and added there is no timeline on making a deal.

Meanwhile, Connor's honesty offered a rare glimpse behind the usual curtain of hockey cliches, and it painted a picture of a locker room that still cares about Hellebuyck but is not willing to accept anything less than full commitment if he walks back through the door.
