Will he pull the trigger?
The Boston Bruins may be in store for a debut on Saturday night.
The Bruins have been riding veteran goaltender Linus Ullmark hard as of late with the injury to Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman leaving them in a less than ideal position when it comes to their goaltending. Ullmark has appeared in 12 of the Bruins 14 games this season and although he has been nothing short of excellent with a 1.95 goals against average and a .936 save percentage, he also is not immune to being fatigued over the course of a full season.
That means that at some point Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery will have to give his goaltender a bit of a rest, and on Saturday the Bruins head coach hinted at the fact that a rest for Ullmark could be coming as soon as this evening. Although Montgomery would not officially confirm his goalie for tonight's game against the Buffalo Sabres, he did indicate that he was leaning towards giving 33 year old veteran goaltender Keith Kindkaid the start on Saturday night.
You might think that Ullmark would relish the opportunity to take on his former team in the Buffalo Sabres, but it could very well be that Montgomery simply feels he needs to give Ullmark a night off to avoid any potential burnout down the road or even any potential injuries from playing too much in a short timeframe.
Kinkaid has not yet appeared in any games for the Bruins at the National Hockey League level, although he has played several games for their American Hockey League affiliate the Providence Bruins this season. In 4 games at the AHL level Kinkaid has recorded a 2.70 goals against average and a .922 save percentage in the 2022-23 season.
Kinkaid of course has a good deal of experience at the NHL level with 167 career games under his belt and a career goals against average of 2.92 and a career save percentage of .905, but has only played a total of 10 games in the NHL over the course of the last 2 season.
