A surprising deal is taking place just one year into his five-year contract.
JJ Peterka had just wrapped up a solid first campaign with the Utah Mammoth, putting up 25 goals and 47 points across all 82 regular season games. He seemed to be settling into his new home, but now, barely a year after signing a five-year deal with Utah, Peterka appears to be on the move again.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Boston Bruins and Utah are working on a trade involving the 24-year-old forward. When Friedman posted the report on Friday early evening, the situation is still developing. Now it's official and Boston is sending back a pair of first-round picks to Utah, one from tonight's first round, no. 23, and 2028 Fla 1st (top 10 protected).
The timing of this reported trade is striking. Peterka was acquired by Utah last summer and subsequently signed a five-year contract extension, at $7.7M AAV through 2029-30, signalling the franchise viewed him as a long-term piece. He rewarded that faith with a consistent season, notching his third consecutive 20-plus goal campaign and chipping in four game-winning goals.
Peterka also spoke glowingly about his experience in Utah during his year-end media availability. "It's been fun overall. The guys in the room are awesome. Had a really good time ... fun to see the group come together, grow together as a team," he said about his first season with the Mammoth.
That makes this potential move all the more surprising. Moving a player just one year into a lengthy commitment suggests either a significant shift in organizational direction for Utah or a deal that was simply too compelling to pass up.
For Boston, adding a young winger who has proven he can score at the NHL level would be a notable acquisition. Peterka brings international experience, durability, and offensive upside, having come within three goals of matching his career high this past season.
For now, all eyes are on both front offices as the hockey world waits to see if this deal crosses the finish line and what the full return looks like for Utah.
