The NHL free agency window had barely opened when the race for John Carlson turned into a frantic multi-team pursuit. Tampa Bay ultimately secured the veteran defenseman on a two-year, $17 million deal, but the outcome was far from certain until the final hours.

According to Pierre LeBrun, Carolina was pushing to sign Carlson right up until the very end. Philadelphia also made an aggressive bid throughout the day. Both teams believed they had a legitimate shot at landing the 36-year-old blueliner.

The twist is that Carolina had already invested assets to get a head start on negotiations. The Hurricanes acquired Carlson's rights from Anaheim before free agency opened, sending the 192nd overall pick in the 2026 draft and minor-league defenseman Kyle Masters to the Ducks for the privilege. Despite that early access, the two sides simply could not come to terms on a contract.

That opened the door for Tampa Bay.

Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois reportedly reached out to Carlson at noon on the day free agency opened. What followed was a series of conversations that stretched deep into the night. Carlson eventually called BriseBois back late that evening and committed to Tampa.

LeBrun echoed that sentiment, noting that Tampa represents a strong match for Carlson at this stage of his career.

The deal carries an average annual value of $8.5 million and runs through the 2027-28 season. It marks just the third organization Carlson has suited up for across a 17-year NHL career that began in Washington.

Carlson spent the bulk of his career with the Capitals, winning a Stanley Cup back in 2018. He was traded to Anaheim ahead of last season's deadline and made an immediate impact, posting four goals and 14 points in 16 regular-season games. He added six assists in 12 playoff contests, helping the Ducks knock off the two-time Western Conference champion Edmonton Oilers in the first round.

With 1,159 career games, 170 goals, and 785 points on his resume, Carlson brings a wealth of experience to a Tampa blue line looking for a veteran presence.

Carolina and Philadelphia will have to look elsewhere to fill their defensive needs, while the Lightning can feel fortunate that a late-night phone call went their way.
