The veteran defenseman has reportedly zeroed in on one Eastern Conference team ahead of free agency.
Free agency does not officially open until July 1, but behind the scenes, the dominoes are already falling into place. Among the most sought-after names available this summer, veteran defenseman John Carlson is generating significant buzz. And by all accounts, the 36-year-old is not sitting idle. He has reportedly already settled on where he wants to play next, even though nothing can become official for another week.
After informing the Anaheim Ducks through his agent Rick Curran that he would not be returning to California, Carlson made it clear that getting back to the Eastern Conference was his top priority. The decision is driven by a mix of family considerations and a desire to finish his career in a familiar setting. Despite ongoing extension talks, Anaheim had no choice but to accept his departure.
According to insider Elliotte Friedman, the widespread expectation around the league is that Carlson will land with the Tampa Bay Lightning as soon as the free agent window opens. Friedman noted that people within the hockey world would be genuinely surprised if the defenseman ended up anywhere else, adding that a short-term deal with a hefty salary is the most likely structure.
The fit makes sense on multiple levels. Tampa Bay recently parted ways with offensive defenseman Darren Raddysh, who was shipped to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade. Bringing in a proven, productive blue liner like Carlson would fill a glaring hole in the Lightning’s defensive corps. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic had previously reported that a potential two-year contract worth roughly $10 million per season, or possibly more, could be on the table for the veteran.
It is worth remembering that Carlson was traded by the Washington Capitals ahead of the March trade deadline in exchange for a first-round pick and a third-round selection. At the time, Washington and Carlson had been discussing a two-year extension at around $9 million annually, but the Capitals’ slide in the standings forced the franchise to move on from its defensive cornerstone.
Several Eastern Conference teams are expected to make a push for the right-shot defenseman, with at least four or five organizations reportedly interested. But based on the signals circulating throughout the league, Tampa Bay holds a commanding lead over the competition.
For Carlson, this move back east is about more than just changing jerseys. At this stage of his career, he is looking to balance competitiveness with quality of life. His 60 points in 71 games last season, split between Washington and Anaheim, proved he remains an elite offensive contributor from the blue line.
Once the market officially opens, things should move quickly. If the predictions hold true, John Carlson will be wearing Lightning blue and white when next season begins.
