John Chayka shares some bad news on new goalie Elvis Merzlikins

Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Chayka met with the media today to discuss yesterdays blockbuster trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets and break down the process and analyses that led to the deal.

The Leafs, of course, shipped out Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz, Emil Andrae and a second-round pick to Columbus. In return, the Leafs receive Kirill Marchenko, Miles Wood and and Elvis Merzlikins, with Columbus retaining some of Merzlikins' salary.

The Leafs are giving up a lot in Knies, but are betting that Marchenko can fill his shoes and then some. Throw in Merzlikins though and that's where this trade gets really interesting. The Leafs already have Sergei Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz entrenched in their crease, so.... where does Merzlikins fit in?

He's a solid goalie with the ability to back up Bobrovsky, no doubt but what does that mean for Stolarz? Well, we may not know for awhile yet as Chayka confirmed to the media today that Merzlikins' offseason shoulder surgery will have him sidelined for approximately 4-5 months.

The 32-year-old goaltender underwent shoulder surgery in August after experiencing discomfort during his offseason workouts. At the time, Columbus announced that Merzlikins would be out indefinitely and that he would be reevaluated before a timeline for his return could be established.

Now, the expectation is that Merzlikins could be sidelined for approximately four to five months, meaning his Toronto debut may not come until well into the 2026-27 season.

That makes the timing of this trade particularly interesting for the Maple Leafs.

Toronto is acquiring a goaltender who has plenty of NHL experience, but they are effectively acquiring him as a long-term addition rather than someone who can immediately help stabilize the crease. Merzlikins has appeared in 274 regular-season games during his NHL career, all with Columbus, posting a .900 save percentage and a 3.22 goals-against average.

His most recent season was considerably more difficult, though. Merzlikins went 14-11-3 with a 3.40 GAA and .883 save percentage across 30 games for the Blue Jackets in 2025-26.

That means Toronto is taking on something of a reclamation project.

There is also an obvious question surrounding what the Leafs' goaltending situation will look like while Merzlikins recovers. If he truly requires four or five months before he is ready to play, Toronto will need its other goaltenders to carry the workload for a significant portion of the regular season.

That could make Merzlikins an intriguing midseason addition rather than an immediate solution.

For the Leafs, the logic behind acquiring him could ultimately be tied to the bigger picture. Toronto clearly believes Merzlikins still has something to offer, otherwise there would be little reason to take on his contract as part of a massive trade centered around Marchenko.

There is certainly risk involved. Shoulder injuries can be tricky for goaltenders, and Merzlikins will have to go through rehabilitation, regain his strength and then get back into game shape before Toronto can realistically count on him.

But if he can return healthy, the Leafs will have added a veteran NHL goaltender with considerable experience at a relatively modest cost because Columbus is retaining part of his salary.

For now, though, Merzlikins is going to be watching from the sidelines.

And while the Marchenko acquisition will immediately dominate the headlines in Toronto, the eventual return of Merzlikins could become one of the more important secondary storylines of this blockbuster trade.
