The Leafs won the No. 1 pick, but the new GM’s comments have sparked immediate concern
The Toronto Maple Leafs finally caught a break on Tuesday, winning the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery and securing the first overall pick for June’s draft in Buffalo.
But instead of celebration alone, the mood around the team has quickly shifted toward uncertainty.
The Leafs entered the lottery with just an 8.5% chance of landing the top selection, making the win a major moment for a franchise looking to reset its direction. The team also officially introduced John Chayka as general manager on Monday, with Mats Sundin joining as senior executive adviser, marking the start of a new era in Toronto.
However, it didn’t take long for Chayka’s first comments to spark concern among fans. When asked about the upcoming selection at No. 1, he admitted he doesn’t yet know who the team will pick.
“We haven’t had scouting meetings yet. Second day on the job,” Chayka said, adding that the situation represents a “monumental opportunity,” according to TSN’s Chris Johnston.
Chayka, who has traded up and traded down in drafts past, also claims it depends on offers and how he values players available: "“I’m always open to everything."
While his honesty may have been refreshing, it also raised eyebrows among a fanbase already anxious about past draft decisions.
Social media reaction was immediate and emotional, with fans questioning whether the new leadership is prepared for such a pivotal moment:
“John do not f*** this up, it’s not that hard,” one fan posted.
“I thought he was keeping up with the league all these years away from it,” another commented.
“He’s definitely doing private scouting combine again,” a third joked, referencing Chayka’s reputation.
The pressure is now squarely on Toronto’s new front office. With prospects like Gavin McKenna leading the draft conversation, along with names like Ivar Stenberg, Caleb Malhotra, Keaton Verhoeff, Chase Reid, and Carson Carels, the decision at the top of the draft will be closely watched.
For a fanbase hungry for a franchise-changing pick, patience may already be wearing thin.
