John Gibson's agent brutally rejects the Maple Leafs.

Strong words.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are, by all accounts, aggressively pursuing a goaltender for the upcoming 2022 - 2023 National Hockey League regular season and it sounds like their current goaltender, Jack Campbell, is unlikely to be among those options.

As a result the Maple Leafs have been linked to just about every goaltender that is available, or even perceived to potentially be available, but it sounds like one of those goalies may be tired of hearing his name in the rumor mill. On Sunday, NHL player agent Kurt Overhardt made it a point to categorically shutdown any trade talk involving his client, Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. In an emphatic statement Overhardt left no doubt about whether or not his client would ever wear a Maple Leafs jersey.

"John Gibson has absolutely no interest in playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, he is committed to the Anaheim Ducks," said Overhardt.

The timing of the announcement on the part of Overhardt is somewhat curious given the fact that, roughly one month ago, NHL insider Chris Johnston reported that the Maple Leafs did not view Gibson as a potential option for them moving forward.

"Well as far as I can tell, the Leafs don’t have interest in Gibson," revealed Johnston on First Up. "I suppose that could change, but for one reason or another, I don’t actually think this is one of the guys they are looking at."

It certainly would be a high risk move on the part of the Maple Leafs with Gibson still having 5 years remaining on an 8 year deal that carries an average annual value and salary cap hit of $6.4 million per season. The 28 year old goaltender has shown that he can consistently take on a heavy workload but his performance in goal has dipped over the last few seasons. Over 56 games for the Ducks last season Gibson recorded a 3.19 goals against average and a .904 save percentage.

If the Maple Leafs aren't willing to make that kind of investment for Jack Campbell, Gibson likely wouldn't be a great fit either.
