John Tortorella speaks to the media for the first time since the NHL's controversial punishment.
The National Hockey League stunned the Vegas Golden Knights and the hockey community at large this week when they announced a stiff punishment would be handed down against the Golden Knights for what the league described as "flagrant" media violations.
The Golden Knights were fined a second round pick which was likely the harsher punishment in the eyes of most fans, but alongside that penalty came a personal fine for Golden Knights head coach John Tortorella in the amount of $100,000. It's a stiff penalty even for a man on an NHL coach's salary and as you would expect Tortorella was asked about his fine when he faced the media on Saturday.
Unfortunately for anyone expecting a fired up Tortorella, the normally bombastic head coach had very little to say and echoed a statement released previously by the Golden Knights.
"We put out a statement as an organization so we'll go by that," said Tortorella. "We have no more comment on that."
While Tortorella's no comment may not seem like much it may be a larger part of an ongoing protest from the Golden Knights against the NHL over recent punishments handed down by the league. Following the announcement of the penalties against them, the Golden Knights issued a press release just to let everyone know they wouldn't be discussing this matter with the press either.
"The Golden Knights are aware of today's announcement from the NHL regarding the postgame media availability following Game 6 in Anaheim.
The organization will have no further comment."
The Golden Knights are playing with fire here but at this point they may be asking themselves what they have to lose.
