With coaching situations across the NHL under review, Tortorella’s name is suddenly resurfacing.
Changes came quickly in Buffalo this weekend when the Sabres parted ways with general manager Kevyn Adams, naming Jarmo Kekäläinen as his replacement. But the front office may not be the only area facing uncertainty.
One of the biggest questions now hovering over the organization is whether Lindy Ruff will remain behind the bench as the Sabres continue their push to finally end a lengthy playoff drought. Ruff is under mounting pressure, and with the standings not cooperating, his job security appears anything but guaranteed.
That uncertainty has already sparked speculation and one familiar name has quickly surfaced: John Tortorella.
Tortorella has a clear connection to Buffalo’s new GM, having been hired by Kekäläinen during his tenure with the Blue Jackets in Columbus. If the Sabres decide to make a coaching change, Tortorella could emerge as a serious candidate.
During his introductory press conference, Kekäläinen praised Ruff’s work ethic and experience but stopped short of offering any long-term commitment.
“He’s been a great coach in the league for a long time. I’ve really enjoyed my interaction with him day-to-day. He works his tail off every day. He’s early. He’s watching tape, he’s analyzing he’s talking to the players. Got a good line of communication with him, and he’s looking for ways to get better,” said the new GM in his first press conference.
While Ruff’s résumé speaks for itself, the lack of a clear endorsement by Kekäläinen leaves the door open. If results don’t improve quickly, Buffalo may be forced to consider a bold move and bringing in Tortorella would certainly qualify.
The question now is whether the Sabres believe another coaching change is the answer, or if Ruff can get enough out of his roster to buy himself more time.
